Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has expressed strong backing for Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Azam Baki, citing a lack of similarly courageous candidates as a reason behind the decision to extend Azam’s term. Speaking at the PKR national congress in Johor Bahru, Anwar addressed the growing criticism over the renewal of Azam’s contract, acknowledging the controversy but emphasizing the rarity of finding someone with the same fearless approach to fighting corruption.

According to Anwar, although the option to appoint a new head for MACC exists, the challenge lies in identifying a replacement capable of pursuing high-profile offenders with equal determination. He noted that since MACC's inception three decades ago, the agency has rarely displayed the level of boldness currently seen under Azam’s leadership, particularly in targeting influential figures often deemed untouchable.

The recent extension of Azam's contract, effective from May 13, was granted with royal consent as confirmed by Chief Secretary Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar. This marks Azam’s third extension since his initial appointment in March 2020. The government had previously renewed his contract in May 2023 and again the following year.

Anwar also reiterated a stance he held since the formation of the unity government in December 2022—resisting the conventional practice of replacing the MACC chief with each new prime minister. He described this decision as part of a broader effort to uphold institutional integrity and continuity, even if it meant facing political backlash.

Criticism, however, has not been in short supply. Among the notable voices questioning the extension was former PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar, who described the decision as unwelcoming. In addition, anti-corruption advocate Edmund Terence Gomez pointed to unresolved concerns regarding alleged conflicts of interest linked to Azam’s shareholdings in 2021. Despite these concerns, Azam has consistently maintained that the shares in question were purchased by his brother using Azam’s trading account, with no personal financial benefit to himself.

The Anti-Corruption Advisory Board reviewed the matter in early 2022 and ultimately cleared Azam of any wrongdoing. Nevertheless, calls for further scrutiny had persisted from both civil society and figures within the Pakatan Harapan coalition.

While Anwar signaled a willingness to make a leadership change if necessary, he urged continued support for Azam until someone with greater resolve could be found.
