MALAYSIA has thrown its support behind Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s offer to host talks between the United States and Iran, as concern deepens over escalating tensions in West Asia and the risk of broader regional destabilisation.
In a carefully calibrated statement, Malaysia’s Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim welcomed what he described as a narrowing but still viable opportunity for diplomacy, urging both Washington and Tehran to engage constructively.
He said Malaysia regards Pakistan’s initiative as credible and well-positioned, given its ties with relevant stakeholders and influence within the Muslim world, while also acknowledging earlier mediation efforts by Oman and other partners.
“Any negotiation must proceed on the basis of genuine intent — not as a tactical pause, but as a pathway to a durable resolution,” he said, warning against ceasefires that merely delay further conflict.
Putrajaya reiterated its position that Iran retains the right to defend its sovereignty under international law, particularly against ongoing strikes associated with Israel affecting both Iran and Lebanon.
At the same time, Anwar stressed the imperative of restraint on all sides, cautioning that further escalation could draw in Gulf states and inflict wider harm on civilian populations and critical infrastructure.
He further cautioned against what he termed the uneven application of international law, arguing that its credibility depends on consistency rather than selective enforcement.
The Prime Minister disclosed that Malaysia has intensified diplomatic engagement, holding discussions with leaders from the Gulf Cooperation Council as well as Türkiye, Egypt, Indonesia, Japan and Pakistan, in an effort to support de-escalation and encourage a negotiated settlement.
In parallel outreach, Anwar spoke with Lebanon’s Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, extending Aidilfitri greetings while voicing concern over deteriorating security conditions in southern Lebanon.
He reaffirmed Malaysia’s support for Lebanese sovereignty and pressed for an expanded ceasefire to include the country, pointing to severe humanitarian consequences marked by widespread displacement and loss of life.
He also conveyed appreciation for Lebanon’s cooperation in safeguarding Malaysian peacekeepers deployed under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon.
In a separate conversation with Qatar's Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed Abdulrahman Al Thani, both leaders exchanged festive greetings and discussed the worsening regional climate.
Anwar extended condolences following a helicopter crash involving Qatari and Turkish personnel and expressed solidarity with the victims’ families.
Malaysia reiterated its support for Qatar’s sovereignty, condemning attacks on the Ras Laffan liquefied natural gas facilities as a threat to global energy security.
Both sides agreed on the urgency of de-escalation and the need to return to dialogue as the only viable path towards regional stability.
Anwar said Malaysia would continue to work closely with international partners to advance efforts towards a just and lasting peace, expressing cautious hope that stability in West Asia can yet be restored. - March 26, 2026
