Anwar mourns passing of Saudi Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdulaziz

PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has described the passing of Saudi Arabia’s Grand Mufti, Sheikh Abdulaziz Abdullah Al-Sheikh, as a profound loss to the Muslim world, honouring him as a scholar whose contributions to Islam transcended borders.

In a statement on Facebook, Anwar extended his sympathies to the people of Saudi Arabia and the global Muslim community, noting the influential religious leader’s lasting legacy.

“We have lost a great scholar whose wisdom and learning have long served the Islamic world and the ummah as a whole,” he wrote.

“On behalf of the Malaysian people, I extend our condolences to all in Saudi Arabia and Muslims around the world who share in this loss.”

“May Allah SWT shower mercy upon his soul and place him among the prophets and the righteous. Al-Fatihah,” he added.

Sheikh Abdulaziz, who held the post of Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia since 1999, died at the age of 82, according to a Royal Court announcement reported by the Saudi Press Agency yesterday.

Widely respected across the Muslim world, he was regarded as one of the most prominent contemporary scholars and a leading figure in Islamic jurisprudence. - September 24, 2025
