Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim says pig farming must not disturb communities, stressing dialogue over division on sensitive land use issues.
PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said activities such as pig farming should not be carried out in areas that cause unease among local residents, stressing that suitable locations must be away from residential communities.
“If alternative locations far from residential areas can be found, then they may proceed,” he said.
From a policy standpoint, the government does not oppose pig farming nor prohibit non-Muslims from consuming pork.
He stressed that communities unfamiliar with such livestock should not be forced to accept operations near their homes, especially when they affect the surrounding environment and sanitation.
Anwar emphasised that governing a country is complex and solutions should not come through anger, insults, or hostility.
Instead, issues must be handled through respectful dialogue and mutual understanding.
“We must respect the rights of those who consume pork, just as they must respect our right to ensure suitable areas are protected.
“The answer is negotiation with respect—not outrage, condemnation, or immediate rejection, even at the proposal stage,” he said.
