Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reaffirmed that the national language, Bahasa Melayu, must remain the foremost priority in any discussion on language, race, or education policies in Malaysia. Speaking after Friday prayers at the Nur al-Hidayah Mosque in Kuah, Langkawi, he emphasised that the Federal Constitution enshrines the official status of Malay and that this principle underpins national unity and the pursuit of knowledge.
Anwar highlighted recent calls to recognise the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) and to increase the use of English in education. While acknowledging the significance of other languages, he insisted that Malay must first be strengthened as the language of knowledge, particularly in emerging fields such as technology and artificial intelligence. He explained that elevating Bahasa Melayu ensures it remains relevant and central to national development, before alternative language or education proposals are considered.
The Prime Minister noted that any policy focused solely on one language or one community could risk societal tension. He urged all parties to approach sensitive issues responsibly, aligning proposals with constitutional principles and the broader national interest. According to Anwar, mastery of Malay provides a foundation for all Malaysians, ensuring that discussions on English proficiency or UEC recognition occur in a context that does not compromise the status of the national language.
Anwar clarified that this position does not reject the value of learning other languages or recognising alternative education systems. Rather, it establishes a hierarchy where the national language retains its central role in governance, education, and innovation. He stated that once the foundational matters regarding Bahasa Melayu are secured, policymakers could then deliberate on additional pathways, including expanding English usage and considering conditional recognition of UEC.
The Prime Minister’s remarks come amid ongoing discussions about the potential recognition of UEC, with DAP Deputy Chairman Nga Kor Ming reportedly scheduled to meet Anwar to present the party’s case. While the administration remains open to dialogue, Anwar stressed that constitutional principles and the dignity of Bahasa Melayu must guide any policy outcomes.
He concluded by urging political actors and stakeholders to act with prudence, ensuring that language and education policies support national cohesion rather than create divisions. By reinforcing Malay as the primary medium of knowledge, the government aims to strengthen unity, safeguard constitutional mandates, and maintain Malaysia’s competitive edge in education and technology.
