Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has revealed that numerous candidates have been proposed for the role of Dewan Negara (Senate) President following the passing of Datuk Mutang Tagal on May 10. Although the names have been submitted, Anwar noted that discussions on these candidates are yet to commence.
When questioned about the exact number of candidates, Anwar simply remarked, "Many." He elaborated, "We have merely presented the names for discussions," during a press conference after his meeting with Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. This meeting was also attended by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof and Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.
The discussions with Abang Johari and other senior state leaders primarily focused on enhancing policy execution and fostering robust relations between the Federal and Sarawak governments. This collaborative effort aims to ensure that governmental policies are implemented efficiently and harmoniously across the different levels of government.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Anwar inaugurated the highlight of the National Journalists’ Day (HAWANA) 2024 celebration, which carried the theme "Ethics: The Foundation of Sustainable Journalism." The event saw the participation of approximately 1,000 media practitioners from a diverse range of countries, including Malaysia, Cambodia, Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam, the Philippines, Brunei, Timor Leste, China, South Korea, Qatar, Kuwait, and France.
HAWANA 2024 stands as the most significant congregation of Malaysian journalists, organized by the Communications Ministry in collaboration with the Sarawak government. The Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) has been entrusted with the execution of this prestigious event. This annual celebration serves as a vital platform for journalists to engage in meaningful dialogue, share best practices, and reinforce their commitment to ethical journalism.
The prime minister's involvement in HAWANA underscores the government's recognition of the crucial role that journalism plays in society. By emphasizing ethical journalism, the event aims to uphold the integrity and sustainability of the profession, especially in an era where misinformation and fake news pose significant challenges.
This convergence of media professionals not only strengthens regional ties but also promotes a shared commitment to high standards of journalism. As journalists from across the globe gather, they bring diverse perspectives and experiences that enrich the collective understanding of ethical journalism.
In summary, the search for a new Dewan Negara President is underway with many names proposed but yet to be discussed. Concurrently, the HAWANA 2024 celebration highlights the essential role of ethical journalism in maintaining a well-informed and resilient society. Through these efforts, the Malaysian government continues to support and enhance the effectiveness and integrity of both governance and journalism.
