PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stated today there is no need to place Tan Sri Azam Baki on leave while a probe continues into allegations linked to the Chief Commissioner of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
Speaking to reporters after Friday prayers at the Politeknik Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Islamic Centre, Anwar emphasised that the government is leaving the matter to a specially appointed committee to investigate the case thoroughly and transparently.
“The Chief Secretary to the Government, Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, advised that the matter be handed over to the committee to examine the case together with the Attorney General, Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar, and the Chief Director of the Public Service, Tan Sri Wan Ahmad Dahlan Abdul Aziz. We also discussed ensuring the investigation is fully transparent and open so that the issues can be properly examined,” he said.
The special committee, chaired by Shamsul Azri, was established to investigate all allegations and related matters concerning Azam, following a decision by the Cabinet at a meeting presided over by Anwar, according to Unity Government spokesperson Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.
Anwar explained that suspending Azam could disrupt the MACC’s overall function.
“There are certainly efforts by some parties to restrain him from taking action against corrupt individuals. Many with vested interests will try to protect the corrupt.
“So, just because you feel pressured or affected, you cannot use that as an opportunity to exert influence… let the committee examine the matter first,” he said.
The Prime Minister further stressed that calls for decisive action against corruption in Malaysia remain limited. “Among politicians and some non-governmental organisations, the demand for strong action against corruption is very restricted and not comprehensive. Even in high-profile cases, there is almost no support to ensure firm action is taken,” he said.
He urged the MACC to act independently. “Do not be concerned with others’ opinions… Azam must carry out his duties bravely and decisively. This country must be saved from the widespread evil of corruption that is currently pervasive,” Anwar added. - February 13, 2026
