Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim made an early return to Sabah on Saturday, just a week after the state election concluded, signaling what he described as a deliberate effort to prevent the public from assuming that political commitments only surface during campaigning periods. His visit was positioned as a message that engagement with Sabahans extends beyond the ballot box.

During a gathering at the Sabah International Convention Centre, Anwar conveyed that he wanted no room for speculation suggesting federal leaders become complacent after elections. He pointed to comments made earlier by Sabah Chief Minister Hajiji Noor, who had stressed that Sabah’s political culture values immediate action following electoral processes. Anwar reinforced this sentiment, noting that his administration views post-election responsibilities as an extension of public trust rather than the end of political accountability.

The prime minister emphasised that the electoral contest has ended and that the next five years should focus on forward momentum. He acknowledged the mixed emotions among voters—some pleased, others disappointed—but described such reactions as natural components of democratic participation. According to him, political maturity lies in listening seriously to the concerns voiced throughout communities and using these insights to improve governance.

Despite spending only two days in the state, Anwar said he had engaged with various community leaders and observed challenges faced across Sabah’s diverse regions, from tribes and rural settlements to urban areas. He highlighted several core issues raised to him, including water supply, fire services, and road infrastructure. He stated that substantial allocations had already been approved for these sectors, including the Pan Borneo Highway and village road upgrades.

However, Anwar acknowledged that many Sabahans continue to face limited access to essential facilities, with some areas experiencing uneven distribution of development. In response, he announced that beginning January, the Prime Minister’s Department’s coordination unit would work with the state government to monitor federal and state projects more closely. Monthly reviews are expected to identify delays, streamline decision-making, and accelerate implementation for 21 major ongoing projects.

He also noted that unlike previous years—in which state-related allocations were only released by April—his administration had advanced approvals to January for two consecutive years. This adjustment, he said, was intended to allow the state government and its agencies to plan early and begin execution without administrative delays.

Anwar concluded his visit by reiterating that the commitments made to Sabah would not be confined to electoral cycles, but would instead be carried forward with consistent oversight and engagement.
