In the 2025 Budget announcement, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim confirmed that the Malaysian government had approved an increase in the national minimum wage from RM1,500 to RM1,700 per month, effective 1 February 2025.
Now, several months after its implementation, the new minimum wage policy has already been put into practice nationwide, marking a major milestone in improving the welfare and financial stability of Malaysian workers.
For small employers with fewer than five employees, the new rate came into effect on 1 August 2025, giving them additional time to adjust to the new regulation.
A Boost for the People’s Economy
The wage increase is a timely relief for many Malaysians struggling with rising living costs. For workers, an extra RM200 a month can make a real difference in managing household expenses, debt, and savings. Small business owner Haniza Ishak, 41, said the raise “may seem small, but it means a lot for those fighting daily to make ends meet.”
When workers feel more valued and fairly compensated, they are also more motivated and productive, creating a positive ripple effect within companies and industries. As private employee Muhamad Amirul Adha Sabri, 25, shared, “A fair wage leads to a positive work culture and stronger teamwork, as everyone feels more appreciated.”
Challenges, But With a Purpose
While some business owners have voiced concerns that higher wages may increase operating costs potentially leading to higher product prices or a shift toward contract employment, the government’s gradual approach aims to balance both sides.
This increase is not just about economics; it’s about human dignity, social justice, and national progress. By ensuring that even the lowest-paid workers can live with greater financial stability, Malaysia is building a stronger foundation for inclusive growth.
Raising the minimum wage to RM1,700 is part of a broader vision under the MADANI framework, promoting fairness, compassion, and economic empowerment. It reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to uplift the rakyat while strengthening the nation’s competitiveness.
