A recent Merdeka Centre survey revealed that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim maintains a 55% positive approval rating among Malaysian voters, suggesting growing public confidence midway through his term. The survey, conducted between May 12 and 23, 2025, involved 1,208 registered voters across various ethnic groups and states, selected through random stratified sampling.

Several factors appear to have influenced this improved perception. The easing of political instability and the formation of a government with a two-thirds majority under Anwar’s leadership have helped restore a sense of stability. Key institutional reforms, including the reintroduction of the Parliamentary Services Act 2025, have also contributed to the view that governance is shifting toward greater accountability.

Economic indicators have played a critical role in shaping public opinion. The Department of Statistics reported inflation falling to 1.4% in March 2025—the lowest in three years—while GDP grew by 4.4% in the first quarter. Initiatives such as raising the minimum wage to RM1,700, continuing fuel subsidies, and festive financial assistance to civil servants have helped ease public concern over living costs, despite lingering anxieties about future subsidy cuts.s

Internationally, Anwar’s diplomatic engagements have elevated Malaysia’s standing. Hosting China’s President Xi Jinping and chairing ASEAN in 2025 brought attention to Malaysia’s global role. Trade deals and new investments have further supported his administration’s profile, although Merdeka Centre noted that domestic economic issues still weigh more heavily on public sentiment than foreign affairs.

Despite the positive approval rating, 50% of respondents believe Malaysia is heading in the wrong direction—an improvement from 61% in June 2024. Meanwhile, those who feel the nation is on the right path rose to 43%, up from 29% a year prior. Persistent concerns about cost-of-living pressures and unease about the government’s economic management continue to temper public optimism.

Dissatisfaction with the federal government currently stands at 48%, showing a decrease from 58% a year ago. According to the Merdeka Centre, this narrow divide between approval and disapproval underscores the importance of consistent economic progress and policy clarity in maintaining voter trust.

As the country moves forward, public focus remains squarely on everyday issues—chief among them, inflation, wages, and job security—making them key battlegrounds for the government’s continued approval.
