In the realm of international politics, speculations about Anwar Ibrahim's vulnerability to external pressures, particularly from the United States, require a closer examination.
Anwar's assertion of independence from major powers since assuming office serves as a buffer against unfounded conjectures.
Anwar's stance at Apec, advocating for justice in Palestine, in front of Joe Biden and other world leaders, does carry diplomatic risks.
After all, “USA has a history of toppling governments who confront its vested interests in any manner. Ousting the heads of states, supporting and appointing puppet politicians, and running everything behind the doors has been the way the USA controls the developing economies. The possibility of this happening again, but now for Malaysia, can not be ignored.”
However, linking this incident to a potential toppling of Anwar by the U.S. demands careful consideration.
While history reveals instances of U.S. involvement in regime changes, the dynamics surrounding Anwar's ascension to power, allegedly supported by US sponsored agencies, suggest a more complex relationship.
The hypothesis that Anwar could be replaced due to recent disagreements with the U.S. at Apec over Anwar's rhetoric in supporting Hamas appears far-fetched.
The Americans are well aware that Anwar's robust support within his PH coalition and a commanding majority in Parliament provide a formidable foundation.
Moreover, a regime change would necessitate trust in an alternative leadership, a decision fraught with uncertainties.
The alternative, Bersatu, with PAS as a major partner in the Perikatan Nasional coalition, might not align seamlessly with Washington's preferences, given suspicions surrounding strong fundamental Islamic beliefs.
The potential consequences of backing a government with ideological disparities may deter the U.S. from pursuing such a course.
The U.S. may find it pragmatic to navigate the complexities of its relationship with Anwar, understanding that the devils they know might be more manageable than uncertainties that lie ahead.
Most likely, Anwar's statement at Apec shall be best forgotten by the powers that be!
