KUALA LUMPUR — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is preparing to defend his position as PKR president for the final time, as he enters what will be his third and final term in office.

Anwar confirmed today that he intends to seek re-election in the party’s internal polls at the end of this month. Although he has not yet submitted his nomination papers, he said he plans to do so soon.

“I haven’t registered yet, the (president) nomination is still vacant… I’ll submit (my nomination) later,” he told reporters after lunch at Restoran Kampung Pandan Kari Kepala Ikan Termasyhur here.

According to the PKR constitution, a president may only serve a maximum of three terms. Anwar took over the party’s top post from his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, in 2018.

Earlier, his daughter and party vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar announced her intention to contest the deputy president post, citing a commitment to revitalising the party and empowering its grassroots members.

She also addressed ongoing criticism branding PKR a “family outfit”, firmly rejecting the claim.

“If the party delegates feel I am fit to shoulder this important responsibility, God willing, I will give my best for PKR,” she said in a statement today.

Nurul Izzah also pointed out that despite receiving the highest number of votes in the vice-presidency races in 2010, 2014 and 2018, the same criticisms have continued.
