PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will head to Bangkok this week for two high-stakes meetings that could mark a turning point in Malaysia’s regional diplomacy.
The first with Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra to tackle the long-running flooding crisis along the Sungai Golok, and later with Myanmar’s junta chief, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, in a rare bid to extend a fragile ceasefire in the troubled country.
The visit underscores Malaysia’s attempt to take a more assertive leadership role in Southeast Asia, balancing urgent domestic concerns with cross-border challenges tied to climate resilience and regional instability.
Anwar confirmed the visit during his address at the Ministry of Finance’s monthly assembly in Putrajaya today, saying discussions with his Thai counterpart would focus primarily on flood mitigation measures along Sungai Golok – the shared river often blamed for severe floods in Kelantan and southern Thailand.
“The dredging and cleaning of Sungai Golok is necessary, as it also contributes to flooding in southern Thailand and Kelantan,” Bernama cited Anwar, who also serves as Finance Minister, saying.
The Bangkok trip will follow Chinese President Xi Jinping’s official state visit to Malaysia, underscoring the intensity of Malaysia’s recent diplomatic engagements.
Also present at the Finance Ministry assembly were Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan and Treasury secretary-general Datuk Johan Mahmood Merican.
Ceasefire for Aid: A Humanitarian Imperative in Myanmar
Perhaps even more significant will be Anwar’s one-on-one meeting with Myanmar’s junta leader, scheduled for Thursday.
The meeting, described by the Prime Minister as a humanitarian intervention, will be the first of its kind by an ASEAN leader since the 2021 military coup in Myanmar.
“For the first time, an ASEAN leader will meet with the Chairman of the State Administration Council (SAC), Senior General Min Aung Hlaing,” Anwar revealed.
“While ASEAN remains committed to the Five-Point Consensus as the basis for engagement with Myanmar, this meeting is being held purely on humanitarian grounds.”
The urgency follows a devastating earthquake in Myanmar, where thousands are reportedly in need of immediate assistance. Malaysia has pledged continued support, including the deployment of a Malaysian Armed Forces-operated field hospital.
Anticipating public scrutiny over foreign aid amid domestic needs, Anwar made a broader case for regional stability, arguing that turmoil in Myanmar has direct spill-over effects on Malaysia, including in human trafficking and border security.
“Instability in Myanmar has direct implications for Malaysia,” he said. “With formal ASEAN-Myanmar talks and bilateral ties remaining limited, it is vital that we show wisdom in building regional solidarity.”
A Truce with Conditions
Anwar disclosed that his meeting with Min Aung Hlaing was swiftly arranged following a direct phone call, during which he made Malaysia’s position clear: aid must be tied to the suspension of military operations.
“The people are suffering… so I asked for a ceasefire,” he said. “Two days later, Myanmar announced a truce in place until April 22. Although not solely due to our efforts, Malaysia has at least taken a clear stand on behalf of ASEAN.”
He added: “*Insya-Allah*, during my meeting with him on April 17, I will push for the ceasefire to be extended.”
That the junta leader agreed to the meeting despite it falling on Thingyan – a major religious holiday in Myanmar – is, according to Anwar, a sign of mutual respect and a willingness to engage.
“With just one phone call, he agreed to meet in Bangkok. This reflects both respect for Malaysia and their willingness to engage in dialogue,” he said.
Anwar’s upcoming visit to Thailand not only highlights Malaysia’s growing role in regional diplomacy, but also signals a shift toward more proactive and principled engagement — one that seeks to address humanitarian crises while pushing forward strategic cooperation in infrastructure, climate resilience, and economic integration. - April 14, 2025
