Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has expressed hope that two of his Cabinet ministers, Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, will reconsider their decisions to resign from their posts. Although both ministers have submitted their resignation letters, Anwar revealed that only their requests for leave have been approved at this stage.
The Prime Minister acknowledged receiving the formal resignation letters but made it clear that no final decision had been made regarding their departure. He suggested that the ministers be given space to reflect on their decisions, noting his personal preference for them to continue serving in the government.
Rafizi, who currently serves as the economy minister, and Nik Nazmi, the minister responsible for natural resources and environmental sustainability, submitted their resignations on May 28. As of now, Rafizi is on leave until mid-June, while Nik Nazmi’s leave extends into early July.
Both ministers recently faced setbacks within their party, Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR). Nik Nazmi, a two-term member of parliament, lost his bid to retain a vice-president position in the party’s internal polls, running alongside Rafizi. Meanwhile, Rafizi himself failed to reclaim the deputy president's post, which was won by Nurul Izzah Anwar, the Prime Minister’s daughter.
The uncertainty surrounding their political futures comes at a time when Anwar is calling for unity and reconciliation within PKR. Speaking at a seminar and closed-door meeting with party leaders in Melaka, Anwar addressed the internal rifts that surfaced following the recent party elections. He encouraged members to rise above factional disputes and focus on the broader goals of the party.
Drawing a symbolic comparison, Anwar reminded his audience that if he could now work alongside Umno—once considered a staunch rival—then resolving differences within PKR should be well within reach. He underscored the need for political maturity and cohesion as the party seeks to move forward with its reform agenda.
The Prime Minister’s Office had earlier issued a statement confirming receipt of the resignation letters but indicated that a final decision would be announced later. For now, both ministers remain officially on leave, with their future roles still hanging in the balance as the party navigates internal changes.
