Anwar urges swift finalisation of reciprocal trade agreement with the United States

PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has underscored the urgency of finalising a Reciprocal Trade Agreement (RTA) between Malaysia and the United States, currently under negotiation between the two countries.

In a statement released today, Anwar, who also serves as Finance Minister, said the matter was a key focus during his meeting this morning with United States Trade Representative (USTR) Jamieson Greer and his delegation.

The visit coincides with the ongoing 57th ASEAN Economic Ministers’ (AEM) Meeting and related sessions in Kuala Lumpur.

“I emphasised the importance of Malaysia and the United States concluding the Reciprocal Trade Agreement currently under negotiation, as it would help provide direction for policy-making and planning within the business communities of both nations,” he said.

Anwar added that he and Greer exchanged views on the broader strategic relationship between Malaysia and the United States, particularly from a trade and ASEAN regional perspective.

“Malaysia, as a trading nation with an open economy, remains committed to fostering strong relations with all its trade partners. This in turn will support sustainable domestic economic growth,” he added.

The proposed trade agreement is expected to deepen bilateral cooperation, offering businesses in both countries greater clarity and access in key sectors, amid growing emphasis on regional economic resilience and supply chain security. - September 25, 2025
