PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called for the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz following a breakthrough in relations between the United States and Iran, warning that prolonged disruption to one of the world's most vital maritime corridors would carry significant consequences for global energy security and international commerce.
Welcoming the understanding reached between Washington and Tehran, Anwar described the development as an important milestone in efforts to reduce tensions across West Asia and pave the way for lasting peace in the region.
Malaysia also welcomed the announcement that a memorandum of understanding between the two countries is expected to be signed within the coming days, signalling a potential turning point after years of hostility.
Anwar praised the diplomatic efforts that helped bring both sides to the current stage of understanding, particularly the mediation undertaken by Pakistan.
"The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to international shipping must now be regarded as the most urgent priority. The strait is a critical artery for global energy security and international trade.
"Any prolonged disruption will benefit no one," he said in a Facebook post on Monday.
The Prime Minister further urged all parties to act in good faith and proceed with the agreed process without delay, stressing the importance of translating the current understanding into a durable and peaceful resolution.
He also cautioned both regional stakeholders and external powers against actions that could undermine diplomatic progress or reignite hostilities.
"Malaysia stands ready to support all efforts towards achieving a just and lasting peace, and calls on the international community to maintain this positive momentum," he said. - June 16, 2026
