PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has delivered a strong warning to participants of the Gerakan Anti Rumah Anutan Haram rally scheduled for tonight, cautioning them against challenging the law or attempting to disrupt public security.

While affirming that freedom of expression and the right to criticise the government remain protected, Anwar stressed that any actions which breach the law or inflame racial tensions will be met with firm enforcement.

“We are freer now. You can express your views, you can criticise,” he said.

“But if you disrupt national security or try to challenge the law, I will take maximum action,” Anwar said while addressing delegates at the Selangor Parti Keadilan Rakyat convention at the Ampang Jaya Municipal Council Convention Centre on Saturday.

Also present were PKR deputy president Nurul Izzah Anwar, party secretary-general Datuk Dr Fuziah Salleh, vice-president Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, Klang PKR division chief Azmizam Zaman Huri and other party leaders.

Anwar also urged rally participants not to assume the role of enforcement authorities, while warning against the exploitation of sensitive issues that could damage inter-ethnic relations.

“You are not judges, you are not the police, and do not try to take over the duties of the police,” he said.

The Tambun member of parliament reiterated his opposition to the construction of houses of worship that do not comply with the law, emphasising that regulations apply equally to all parties.

“If we violate the rules, the result will be hatred and the problems will not be resolved,” Anwar added.

Earlier, Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus said authorities had not granted permission for the rally to proceed in front of the Sogo shopping complex, citing security intelligence and feedback from stakeholders, including nearby premises owners.

However, controversial independent preacher and coordinator of the Anti-Illegal Places of Worship movement, Zamri Vinoth, said on Friday night that the rally would still go ahead.

Previously, the Home Ministry said police would meet the organisers to urge them to cancel the gathering, particularly in view of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s two-day official visit to Malaysia beginning today. - February 7, 2026
