Anwar warns schools against covering up bullying cases

PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has issued a stern warning to school administrators and parent-teacher associations (PIBG) not to conceal bullying cases under the guise of protecting institutional reputation, saying such actions amount to shielding criminal acts.

Speaking after performing Friday prayers at Surau Jannatul Firdaus, PPAM Seruling in Precinct 5, Anwar criticised the tendency of some school leaders to prioritise image over accountability.

“Headteachers, parents — all must give their full cooperation. One of the problems is the misunderstanding or misplaced priorities of some school administrators who seek to protect the school’s image,” he said.

“When cases arise, they cover them up, claiming it’s to safeguard the school’s good name. But if you hide it, that’s a wrongdoing — it’s akin to protecting a crime,” Anwar added.

He called for a shift in mindset, urging all parties involved in the education ecosystem to prioritise student safety and transparency over public perception.

His remarks come amid growing public concern over bullying incidents in Malaysian schools, some of which have allegedly been downplayed or ignored by administrators. - October 17, 2025
