Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has emphasised that extensions for judicial appointments are not guaranteed and must adhere strictly to the constitutional framework rather than be influenced by political sentiment.
Speaking during the monthly staff assembly at the Prime Minister’s Office in Putrajaya, Anwar underlined that decisions regarding judges, including extensions nearing retirement, must be guided by the Federal Constitution. He pointed out that such matters are handled through formal consultation between the Judicial Appointments Commission, the Prime Minister, and the King, with discussions involving the Conference of Rulers.
Addressing growing public debate, he noted that requests or opposition surrounding extensions—particularly ahead of a judge’s retirement—should not be politicised. He remarked that certain quarters had attempted to frame these routine administrative procedures as political controversies, potentially undermining public confidence.
The prime minister’s comments arrive amid speculation surrounding Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat, who is due for mandatory retirement upon reaching the age of 66 on July 2. While the constitution allows for an extension with the King’s approval under Article 125(1), no official decision has been announced.
Anwar also addressed public reactions to two recent high-profile court decisions, both of which resulted in discharges not amounting to acquittals (DNAA): one involving former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and the other, Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman.
He noted the contradictory reactions to these verdicts, depending on political affiliation, and said the government’s role was not to influence judicial outcomes. He stressed that his own interactions with senior judges were strictly limited to administrative discussions and not related to any specific case outcomes.
Referring to the public's varied interpretation of the DNAA rulings, Anwar highlighted that support or criticism often reflects partisan leanings rather than a principled view of judicial independence.
Reiterating his commitment, the prime minister made it clear that upholding the autonomy of the judiciary remains a key responsibility of his office. He stressed that no extension, appointment, or judicial ruling should be driven by external pressure or political lobbying, reaffirming his administration's stance to protect the integrity of the judicial process.
