In the aftermath of a year marked by electoral uncertainties, Malaysia's unity government, led by the 10th Prime Minister, has demonstrated resilience and strategic positioning for the nation's future. Reflecting on the past 12 months, a transformative narrative has emerged, signaling the fulfillment of crucial criteria for a lasting political order.

As Malaysians cast their votes a year ago, uncertainty loomed over the nation's destiny in what would become one of the most unpredictable general elections in history. With three coalitions, each having had a stake in the federal government, the prevailing consensus was that none could secure a majority independently. The aftermath of the November 19, 2022 elections validated this perception, as no single coalition claimed an outright majority. However, the combined strength of Coalition A (82 seats) and Coalition B (30 seats) reached the magical threshold of 112 seats.

After five days of intense negotiations and high-profile confrontations, the 10th Prime Minister was sworn in on November 24, solidifying the foundation for what promises to be a transformative period in Malaysian politics.

In January 2022, a research piece was presented in collaboration with the Yusof Ishak Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (Iseas) titled 'Malaysia on the cusp of a new political order.' This work examined the historical political orders in Malaysia, spanning from the multi-ethnic Alliance government to the decline of Umno-led Barisan Nasional and the rise of Coalition C. Each order, lasting more than a decade, exhibited relative stability before fraying at the edges.

Analyzing Malaysia's political history, two essential prerequisites for a successful political order were identified: the ability to secure votes across ethnic lines and garner support from Sabah and Sarawak parties and their constituents.

In the context of this new political order, assessing the achievements of the Prime Minister and the unity government becomes paramount, particularly in light of the myriad challenges encountered over the past year.

First and foremost, the Prime Minister secured a vote of confidence in Parliament on December 19, 2022, signaling a crucial show of support for leadership.

Secondly, the internal strife within a major political party, with factions supporting the unity government and those favoring a different leader as Prime Minister, culminated in the mainstream group securing a landslide victory in the party election in March.

The state elections in six regions marked the zenith of Coalition D, offering voters a familiar narrative. However, it became evident that this rhetoric had limited appeal beyond specific states with a high concentration of voters from a particular ethnic group.

Crucially, the unity government's triumph in the by-elections underscored its expanding influence and disproved the notion of a potential change in leadership. The rejection of divisive politics by a substantial number of voters demonstrated a national aversion to the dangerous flames of discord.

The unequivocal support from a regional leader signaled a significant milestone, as a regional coalition pledged its backing for the Prime Minister to lead the unity government to the term's completion.

In August, a prediction was made regarding the potential decline of a political party and the ascent of another in specific regions. The subsequent self-implosion of the former, leading to the latter appointing an advisor to the states it governs, highlights the shifting political landscape.

In summary, after overcoming numerous challenges, the stumbling blocks to the new political order have largely been dismantled. The unity government has successfully met the prerequisites for a lasting political order by securing votes across ethnic lines and garnering support from regional parties.

The current challenge lies in whether the unity government can propel the nation into a second economic take-off, serving as the cornerstone for the rebuilding of the nation in this new political order. As the dust settles on a transformative year, the prospect of a resilient and promising future for Malaysia beckons under the leadership of the Prime Minister and the unity government.
