The hall stirred as he reached the podium. There was something unmistakably personal in the way Thomas Foo began — less like a founder unveiling a major regional platform, more like a parent telling the story of how it all started.
“Before we speak about the future,” he said, pausing just long enough to draw the audience in, “allow me to take you briefly into the past.”
With that, the Asia Offroad Expo & Convention (AOX) 2026 was not merely launched — it was IGNITED. A 40-second action video — featuring a 4WD, adventure bike, mountain bike, and recreational vehicle kicking up dust and bursting off the screen — added to the sense of momentum.
The official launch of AOX 2026, held on April 28 at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur, marked a defining moment for Malaysia and the broader Asian offroad and overland community.

Asian Offroad and Overland Vision Transfoming into a Regional Movement
It was the unveiling of a vision more than three decades in the making — one rooted in heritage, driven by innovation, and powered by a growing regional movement.
Foo’s speech anchored the event with emotional weight and historical context. He painted vivid images of Malaysia’s early off-roading days in the 1980s, when rugged vehicles navigated logging tracks, plantations, and dense jungle terrain — not for sport, but out of necessity. These were not polished expeditions with high-tech gear, but raw, purpose-driven journeys that forged resilience, camaraderie, and a deep respect for the land.
“That spirit,” Foo emphasized, “is what AOX 2026 seeks to preserve — even as we push the industry forward.”

AOX Founder Thomas Foo Tracing the Roots of Offroad and Overland
He spoke about the formation of the 4x4 Adventure Club Kuala Lumpur in 1987, and how the club undertook expeditions such as the Trans-Peninsula and Trans-Borneo in the late 1980s — long before routes were established and support systems existed.
He traced the birth of the Rainforest Challenge, the rapid evolution of the industry, the growth of competitions, advances in technology, and how Malaysian off-roaders gained world-class recognition.
He described how off-roading evolved beyond competition into overlanding, adventure travel, and cross-continental exploration.
He also highlighted its role in humanitarian work through 4x4 Relief Malaysia — driving deep into remote areas to deliver aid and support communities.
“Today, off-roading in Malaysia is no longer just a recreation. It is a lifestyle. It is an industry. It is a movement,” Thomas said.
“From just a handful of vehicles in the jungle, we have grown into an entire industry under one roof today.
“The Asia Off-Road Expo is born from this journey. Today is not just another event. Today is the next chapter.”

New Chapter of Asian Offroad and Overland Begins
And moving forward, it is.
AOX 2026 is positioned as Asia’s first comprehensive platform dedicated to the offroad and overland ecosystem — bringing together manufacturers, adventure enthusiasts, tourism stakeholders, safety experts, and policymakers under one roof.
What makes AOX particularly compelling is its regional ambition. While deeply rooted in Malaysia’s offroad heritage, it seeks to position Asia on the global map.
For too long, the region’s offroad scene has been fragmented, with passionate communities operating in silos. AOX aims to unify these voices, creating a platform that fosters collaboration, knowledge exchange, and cross-border engagement.
The potential impact is significant. Increased tourist arrivals, longer travel durations, and higher spending are all within reach as Malaysia positions itself as a gateway for offroad adventures in Asia. Beyond tourism, the expo is expected to stimulate business opportunities — from vehicle sales and aftermarket accessories to tour operations and training services.

AOX 2026 to Grow Adventure and Sustainable Tourism
This ambition was underscored by the presence and endorsement of the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Art and Culture (MOTAC), YB Chiew Choon Man.
“This event not only serves as a platform to showcase the latest technologies and innovations,” said Chiew, “but also acts as a catalyst for the growth of adventure tourism and responsible ecotourism industries.
“I believe AOX 2026 has strong potential to become a new benchmark in the evolution of the offroad and outdoor lifestyle industry in this region.”
The expo is organised by a team deeply embedded in the offroad and adventure ecosystem for more than 35 years, having led worldwide 4x4 expeditions across six continents — Asia, Europe, Africa, North America, South America, and Australia.

MIROS, MIESG Appointed as Official Road Safety Partner and ESG Partner
The Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) has been appointed the Official Road Safety Partner for AOX 2026.
MIROS Director of the Vehicle Safety and Biomechanics Centre, Encik Zulhaidi Mohd Jawi @ Said, described the initiative as timely in bringing together regulators, industry players, adventure enthusiasts, and policymakers to shape the future of offroad and overland mobility in a structured manner.
“As offroad and overland activities continue to grow in popularity, we must recognise that many convoy journeys do not exist in isolation. They often begin and end on public roads, interacting with everyday road users,” Zulhaidi pointed out.
“Enforcement and regulatory considerations must not be overlooked. Safety is not optional. It must be embedded within guidelines, supported by enforcement where necessary, and reinforced through education and industry collaboration.”
In addition, the Malaysia Institute of ESG (MIESG) has been appointed the Official Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) Partner.

AOX 2026 can be Asia’s First ESG-aligned Offroad and Overland Platform
MIESG Deputy President, Prof. Dato’ Dr. Nor Aieni Haji Mokhtar, said: “AOX 2026 has the opportunity to position itself as Asia’s first ESG-aligned offroad and overland convention platform.
“This means going beyond showcasing vehicles and equipment. It means embedding sustainability into the industry’s core. When governance is clear, investors gain confidence. When standards are measurable, authorities are supportive. When sustainability is embedded, industries grow responsibly.”
AOX 2026 is set to become a convergence point for these advancements — where tradition meets technology, and legacy industries embrace future-forward thinking.
“For too long, the region’s offroad scene has been fragmented, with passionate communities operating in silos,” Thomas explained.
“AOX aims to unify these voices, creating a platform that fosters collaboration, knowledge exchange, and cross-border engagement.”
Yet, for all its economic promise, AOX remains grounded in something more human. As Thomas Foo closed his speech, he returned to the essence of why it mattered.
“This is more than an expo. AOX 2026 is a meeting point for brands, innovators, exhibitors, industries, policy makers, adventurers, and communities,” he said.
“A place where ideas connect, where partnerships are formed, and where new opportunities are created.
“Today, we are proud to host a strong lineup of exhibitors — including Ironman 4x4, IPG 4x4, 4WD Equipment, and SANDKAT Suspension, among many others driving innovation in our exhibition space.”
In that moment, AOX 2026 revealed its true identity — not just as an expo and convention, but as a movement. A movement that honours the past, embraces the present, and drives boldly into the future.
