Following a flash mob protest by several NGOs in front of Xin Jian Chang Sdn Bhd's factory in Batu Pahat, Johor, the supplier of the controversial "Allah" socks has taken steps to address the outcry. Oriental Daily News reported that the company hung an apology banner at its factory, complying with demands from the protesters after police mediation.
The demands included hanging an apology banner at the factory for one month, recording an apology video for social media platforms, and making donations to orphanages, Islamic schools, or other needy organizations in the area. The apology banner, sighted today, expresses Xin Jian Chang's remorse and commitment to preserving the sensitivity of the multi-religious society, maintaining harmony, and improving quality control efforts.
In response to safety concerns, the factory has been temporarily closed from today until Sunday. Oriental Daily News reported that during a visit, the factory doors were locked, and no work was being carried out.
Xin Jian Chang reiterated its apology over the matter, emphasizing that it never intended to produce or distribute the offensive product. However, the company also expressed grave concern over the sharing of sensitive personal data of its key officers on social media and reported instances of intimidation, including threats of arson against the company.
The controversy erupted when images of the socks bearing the word "Allah" being sold at KK Mart's Bandar Sunway outlet circulated on social media. In response, KK Mart issued a public apology, particularly to the Muslim community, and ceased the sale of the socks, terminating its contract with Xin Jian Chang.
Xin Jian Chang attributed the error to manufacturers in China, claiming they mistakenly sent the socks, which the company overlooked. During a police inspection of the Xin Jian Chang factory, only five pairs of the "Allah" socks were found, all of which were recalled from KK Mart.
The actions taken by Xin Jian Chang reflect an attempt to address the concerns raised by the public and NGOs. However, the incident underscores the importance of robust quality control measures and sensitivity to religious and cultural sensitivities in product manufacturing and distribution.
