Have you ever noticed your Siri going off on its own or noticed ads showing up on your phone relating to something you’ve talked about in private? Well, you may be entitled to claim money from Apple.
Siri has recently been accused by users for recording their private conversations without consent, although Apple has denied the claims and any wrongdoing.
Instead, they agreed to settle this class-action lawsuit by paying $95 million to its affected users.
Devices include iPhones, Macbooks, Apple Watches, iPads and even Apple TVs. These devices have to be used between September 17th 2014, and December 31st 2024.
However, it may only be valid for U.S. users who can submit their claims for compensation.
Each user can claim compensation with a cap of $20 per device for up to five devices with Siri function.
Although this case only affects Apple users with Siri, many other popular digital assistants were also accused of hearing private conversations in 2019, such as Amazon’s Alexa and Google Assistant.
These claims of invasion of privacy from major tech firms came from workers who worked on the digital assistance, as reported by The Guardian and Bloomberg.
The plaintiffs of this case alleged Apple accessed their communications ‘without their consent’ by activating Siri without them knowing with trigger words that they aren’t aware of.
Currently, users are able to activate and access Siri by saying the phrase ‘Siri’ or ‘Hey Siri’ or by pressing and holding the device’s side button.
For users to claim payments from this lawsuit, they should have received an email with their Apple ID and the subject ‘Lopez Voice Assistant Class Action Settlement’ with information required to fill up the claim form.
The form needed to claim compensation is publicly available; consumers have to provide proof of purchase of their Siri device.
The deadline is on July 2nd; payments will likely arrive later this year, and the hearing for final approval will be set on August 1.
