Apple unveils iPhone 18 Pro, first foldable iPhone Duo

APPLE has introduced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max alongside the iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone, adding new camera controls, upgraded processors and redesigned displays to its latest smartphone lineup.

The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max feature a 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture, allowing users to manually adjust aperture settings in the Camera app. The system uses six laser-cut blades and can automatically adjust for depth of field and lighting.

The camera system also adds manual controls for shutter speed, white balance and aperture, as well as a histogram for checking exposure. Apple has also added new texture and grain controls to Photographic Styles.

For video, the phones support Cinematic effects applied after recording at up to 60 frames per second. Time-lapse recording supports 4K and Dolby Vision HDR, while Audio Mix uses updated algorithms to improve voices and isolate music.

The iPhone 18 Pro models also introduce Apple Reference Image, which uses signed sensor data to create an unalterable reference image that can be compared with the edited version in the Photos app. Apple said the feature is intended to help establish whether changes were made to an image.

The phones are powered by Apple's A20 Pro chip, built using a 2-nanometer process. The chip has a six-core CPU, seven-core GPU and Dual 16-core Neural Engine. Apple said the GPU is up to 40 percent faster than the previous-generation A19 Pro, while the chip has 50 percent more memory bandwidth.

A new vapor chamber provides additional thermal management for sustained performance. Apple said the system enables up to a 40-percent gain in sustained performance over the previous generation.

The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max also have a redesigned Dynamic Island capable of displaying up to three Live Activities at once. Both models run iOS 27 and include Apple Intelligence and Siri AI, which is rolling out in beta.

Siri AI can use personal context across messages, email and photos, as well as onscreen information, to respond to requests. Apple said processing uses a combination of on-device processing and Private Cloud Compute.

Battery life varies by model. The eSIM-only iPhone 18 Pro is rated for up to 36 hours of video playback, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max is rated for up to 45 hours. The Pro models support faster charging, with the iPhone 18 Pro reaching 50 percent in around 15 minutes under wired charging conditions.

The iPhone Duo introduces a different form factor. Closed, it has a 5.4-inch outer display, while opening the device reveals a 7.6-inch inner display. Both screens use the same aspect ratio and support ProMotion, Always On and up to 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness.

The foldable phone uses a precision hinge and a titanium enclosure. It has an IP68 rating for splash, water and dust resistance, while Ceramic Shield 2 protects the front display.

The iPhone Duo uses the same A20 Pro processor as the Pro models and has a vapor chamber for thermal management. Apple said it provides up to 35 percent better sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro.

Its camera system includes a 48MP Fusion Main camera, a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera and a 2x optical-quality Telephoto option. The folding design enables features such as using the outer display as a preview while taking a photo with the rear cameras.

The device also supports 4K video at 120 frames per second in Dolby Vision through its Main camera.

iOS 27 has been adapted for the foldable design, with multitasking features including Split View, which allows two apps to be displayed side by side. The software also adjusts content and controls as the phone is opened, closed or reoriented.

The iPhone Duo uses two batteries, one on each side of the device. Apple rates it for up to 31 hours of video playback using the inner display and up to 44 hours using the outer display. When both displays are used equally, Apple rates battery life at up to 24 hours of use per charge.

The iPhone Duo is eSIM-only worldwide and supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread through Apple's N1 wireless networking chip.

The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will be available in black, silver, glacier and burgundy. Preorders begin Sept. 12, with availability starting Sept. 18.

The iPhone Duo will be available in star white and night sky. Preorders begin Oct. 16, with availability starting Oct. 23.
