In a dramatic turn of events at the High Court in Kuala Lumpur, former Prime Minister Najib Razak’s defense team argued that the substantial funds he allegedly received as an "Arab donation" were used primarily for political purposes rather than for personal indulgence. This assertion was presented by his lawyer, Shafee Abdullah, during the ongoing trial concerning the infamous 1MDB scandal.
Najib Razak faces serious charges, including 25 counts of money laundering and abuse of power, related to an estimated RM2.28 billion that purportedly flowed into his AmBank accounts from February 2011 to December 2014. The funds are believed to be linked to the 1MDB state investment fund, which has been at the center of a global financial scandal.
Shafee Abdullah contended that Najib's spending habits diverged sharply from typical corrupt practices. He argued, "It is against the pathology of corruption that someone would use such money for the public good." He emphasized that approximately 95% of the funds in question were not utilized for Najib’s personal gain, citing a lack of evidence showing extravagant purchases or luxurious expenditures—such as private jets or lavish parties.
When pressed by Justice Collin Lawrence Sequerah about the legal basis for his claims, Shafee admitted that the case was unprecedented, leaving it to the court to draw its own conclusions based on the facts presented. He highlighted the importance of understanding the context in which the funds were allegedly used, framing the narrative around Najib’s intention to serve public interests rather than to enrich himself.
In response, the prosecution maintained a different stance. Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Kamal Bahrin Omar underscored that the source of the funds—acknowledged as illegal proceeds—was the core issue. His colleague, DPP Ahmad Akram Gharib, reiterated that whether the funds were employed for political purposes or personal benefit was largely irrelevant. What mattered, they argued, was that Najib had ultimately used the money to his advantage, regardless of the intended purpose.
