Kota Kinabalu: The 2023 International Arbitration Colloquium: Sovereignty and State Immunity in Commercial Arbitration, Sabah Edition will be held on July 4 (Tuesday) at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC), here.

The Sabah edition is a follow-up to the colloquium held in Kuala Lumpur, and is estimated to be attended by 500 people.

The main objective of the collaborative programme involving the Legal Affairs Division, the Prime Minister’s Department (BHEUU, JPM), Asian International Arbitration Centre (AIAC), Institute for Development Studies (Sabah) (IDS) and Sabah Law Society (SLS) is to discuss various issues related to the Sulu claim case.

This includes a historical perspective and related issues in regards to the existence of the 1878 and 1908 agreements, the implications of the 1958 New York Convention and sovereign immunity, as well as the arbitration procedure regarding this case, including the abuse of the arbitration process that has existed for so long by the parties- related party.

The expert panel members are among the members of the Special Secretariat for dealing with the Claims of Filipinos Who Claim to Be Heirs of Sultan Jamalul Kiram II (Sultan of Sulu) Against Malaysia and local and foreign law lecturers.
