A giant standing stone discovered at Tel ‘Eton in Judah is giving archaeologists a fresh piece of evidence in a debate that has lasted for decades. A new study suggests the stone was deliberately taken out of religious use more than 2,700 years ago, possibly during a period of major religious change linked to King Hezekiah.

The question of whether Hezekiah’s reforms actually happened as described in the Bible remains one of the most discussed topics in the archaeology of ancient Judah.

Until now, most archaeological evidence connected to the issue has come from temples, shrines, and other public religious sites. The new research, published in the Jerusalem Journal of Archaeology, takes a different route by examining a large residence at Tel ‘Eton, where a single stone appears to tell a surprisingly detailed story about changing beliefs.

A Stone That Stood At The Center Of An Important Building

The study, led by ProfessorAvraham Faustof Bar-Ilan University, focuses on a large massebah, or standing stone, uncovered inside Building 101, a structure often described as the governor’s residence.

As described in the research report, the block was no small object. It stood about 1.4 meters (4.6 feet) tall and weighed roughly 750 kilograms (1,650 pounds). Researchers found that it originally stood upright in the building’s largest room, directly facing the entrance.

That location was impossible to miss. Anyone walking into the building would have seen it immediately. Archaeologists foundno practical reason for placing such a massive stone there, which is why they believe it served a religious purpose.

As reported in the study, similar standing ones are well known from ritual contexts across the ancient Near East. The position of the monument suggests it played a significant role in the lives of the people who occupied the building.

“The location of the stone suggests that it played an important role in the lives of the building’s occupants,” Faust noted.

Removed From Use, But Not Destroyed

Rather than remaining on display, the giant boulder was carefully laid on its side and incorporated into a stone platform built around it. What caught researchers’ attention is what did not happen: the stone was never smashed, broken, or deliberately damaged.

The findings indicate that this was a deliberate choice. The object lost its religious function, yet it was treated with a certain degree of respect.

“Those responsible for changing religious practices may have wished to eliminate the stone’s ritual function,” Faust explained.

At the same time, the people carrying out the change seem to have avoided desecrating it.

“They removed it from use without destroying it, effectively neutralizing its cultic significance while preserving the object itself.

The Quiet Religious Shift Taking Place at Home

What makes the discovery especially interesting is where it was found. Archaeologists usually look for evidence of religious reforms in temples and public sanctuaries. Evidence from homes and administrative buildings is much harder to identify.

Faust argued that when household religious practices were abandoned, smaller ritual objects could simply be removed and taken elsewhere. As a result, many changes in domestic worship may have left little trace for archaeologists to uncover.

The standing stone at Tel ‘Eton is different because its size made removal difficult. Instead, the residents chose to incorporate it into a new structure. The study stated that this happened before the site was destroyed by the Assyrian Empire at the end of the eighth century BCE, a period that broadly overlaps with Hezekiah’s reign.

The researcher does not present the discovery as proof that Hezekiah personally ordered the stone’s removal. Rather, the evidence fits with other archaeological finds pointing to religious changes across Judah during the same period.
