Archaeologists in Peru unearth ancient human skeleton at base of pyramid

  • Archaeologists in Peru have discovered the skeletal remains of an adult man near the base of the ancient Huaca Pucllana pyramid in Lima.
  • Researchers believe the individual was sacrificed during a ritual coinciding with the sealing of a canal joined to a ceremonial pool.
  • Gladys Paz, lead archaeologist on the excavation, said the discovery will help experts gain insight into “the rituals of the Lima culture”.
  • The body was interred resting on its left side inside the canal, with its skull aligned towards both the pyramid and the Pacific Ocean.
  • The Lima civilisation flourished along the dry central coast from the 1st to 7th century, predating the Inca Empire by around 700 years.
