Looking for romantic heroines and sweeping love stories? You may want to look elsewhere. In this Jane Austen adaptation, the spotlight falls on a widow who is as brilliant as she is manipulative, whose schemes are enough to scandalise polite English society.
Even today, Jane Austen is often reduced to the image of a writer of sentimental romances. Yet while her favourite subjects were undoubtedly love stories and the balls of the English aristocracy, she explored them with razor-sharp wit and biting irony, exposing the flaws and hypocrisies of the society around her. It is precisely this side of Austen that Love & Friendship, adapted from her epistolary novella Lady Susan, brings to the fore. One of her least-known works, it is also among her boldest: a delightful period comedy featuring a manipulative heroine who is witty, ruthless, and surprisingly modern.

A brilliant and ruthless heroine
Set in the late eighteenth century, Love & Friendship centres on Lady Susan Vernon, a charming young widow whose notorious reputation unsettles the upper classes. Penniless and determined to maintain her luxurious lifestyle, she sets out to secure a wealthy husband for herself while also arranging an advantageous marriage for her daughter, who has recently fled her boarding school and has little interest in marrying at all.
With the help of her friend Alicia, an American living in exile in England, Lady Susan employs every ounce of her ingenuity to encourage the affections of the handsome Reginald, the younger brother of her hostile sister-in-law. At the same time, she attempts to steer the wealthy but hopelessly foolish Sir James Martin towards her daughter—who, for her part, does everything she can to thwart her mother's plans.

An overlooked novel – and an equally underrated adaptation
Written when Jane Austen was just eighteen or nineteen years old, the short epistolary novel Lady Susan reveals one of the most delightfully ironic sides of her writing. Unlike Austen's more familiar heroines, Lady Susan is not searching for true love. Ambitious and fully aware of the power of her charm, she has no qualms about manipulating those around her to achieve her ambitions.
Directed by Whit Stillman, Love & Friendship brilliantly captures this mischievous spirit through sparkling dialogue and subtle, incisive humour. Kate Beckinsale's performance is a major part of the film's success. She portrays Lady Susan as fiercely independent, delightfully Machiavellian, and armed with a razor-sharp wit that frequently leaves audiences smiling.
With its understated direction and wonderfully sharp script, Love & Friendship is one of the few screen adaptations that truly captures the spirit of Jane Austen's work. It is a rare gem that reminds us the young novelist was an uncompromising observer of the manners and hypocrisies of her age.
