KPDN proposes including imported goods influx and social visit pass misuse in a new MOF-led task force’s scope to protect local MSMEs comprehensively.
PAPAR: The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) has proposed expanding a new task force’s scope to address the influx of imported goods and the misuse of social visit passes.
Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali said the proposal was made during a post-Cabinet meeting to ensure comprehensive solutions for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
He stated that the surge of foreign goods into the local market is negatively impacting domestic products.
“Although the government encourages the purchase and use of local products, we are seeing a growing trend of imported goods entering the market, particularly due to their lower prices,” he said.
Armizan added that the issue extends beyond price to include security, quality and compliance standards.
He emphasised that the task force is crucial for coordinating legal, policy, enforcement and monitoring actions across multiple ministries.
The task force, to be coordinated by the Ministry of Finance, was announced by government spokesperson Fahmi Fadzil.
It will include members from MITI, the Home Ministry, KPDN, KUSKOP and the Ministry of Housing and Local Government.
Armizan assured that KPDN would provide full cooperation to ensure market sustainability and prioritise local products.
Separately, he proposed a closer review of foreign investment in Sabah’s tourism sector.
He cited preliminary reports indicating about 81 resorts and chalets in Semporna are operated by foreign investors.
“Foreign investment is welcomed, but a comprehensive study needs to be conducted to assess the real benefits to the state and local communities,” he said.
