A Ludhiana family is in shock after learning about the sudden death of their 19-year-old daughter, a nursing student, in Perth, Australia. The deceased, Komalpreet Kaur, was the daughter of Indian Army Subedar Amrik Singh of Raikot.

Komalpreet died in an accident on Saturday night after she visited a restaurant at Bentley Shopping Centre. A speeding car hit her as she was leaving the shopping centre after finishing her shift. Although Perth ambulance staff tried to revive an unconscious Komalpreet by performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and other life-saving procedures, doctors at Royal Perth Hospital pronounced her dead on arrival.

The driver of the car involved in the accident was also a 19-year-old youth. According to the aggrieved family, Perth police have initiated a probe, but the outcome of the inquiry has not yet been shared with them.

Fifty-year-old Subedar Amrik Singh and his wife are still in shock. Close relatives said Komalpreet had started a nursing course at Stanley College in Perth in July 2025 and worked part-time in the Canning Vale area to support her studies.

Jarnail Singh, a close relative, said Komalpreet’s death came as a double blow. “Besides losing their eldest child, repatriating the body is a huge financial burden on the family,” he said.

“While the family has yet to repay the heavy loans taken to send Komalpreet to Australia ten months ago, it will now have to arrange around 14,000 Australian dollars to bring her body home,” Singh added.

The family has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu to intervene and arrange for the repatriation of the body at government expense, especially in view of the family’s association with the Indian Army.

Komalpreet was the eldest of three siblings. She is survived by an 18-year-old sister and a 14-year-old brother.
