Not all beaches are created equal. Some stand out for their sheer size, others for rare natural phenomena or spectacular geological formations. Across the globe, a handful of coastlines are so distinctive that they have become remarkable natural wonders in their own right.

From Brazil and Australia to Spain, Costa Rica and Northern Ireland, these extraordinary beaches challenge our traditional idea of what a shoreline should look like. Here are five spectacular beaches that are well worth adding to your travel list.

Playa Quesera: the beach that glows beneath the stars

Nestled on Costa Rica's Nicoya Peninsula, Playa Quesera is renowned for its unspoilt tropical setting and tranquil waters. However, it is after sunset that the beach truly comes to life.

Under the right conditions, the sea begins to glow thanks to a natural phenomenon known as bioluminescence. With every movement in the water, shimmering blue lights appear and ripple across the surface, creating the illusion of thousands of tiny stars dancing on the sea.

Whitehaven Beach: Australia's whitest sand

Located in the heart of Australia's Whitsunday Islands, Whitehaven Beach stretches for several kilometres through a stunning tropical landscape. Its greatest claim to fame is its brilliantly white sand, made up of 98% pure silica.

The beach transforms with the changing tides and shifting light. Around Hill Inlet, the incoming and outgoing tides continuously create swirling patterns where brilliant white sand meets turquoise water, producing a breathtaking natural masterpiece worthy of a postcard.

Praia do Cassino: the beach that seems to go on forever

In southern Brazil, Praia do Cassino extends for mile after mile along the Atlantic coast. Situated in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, it is widely regarded as the longest beach in the world, boasting a coastline of around 250 kilometres.

The seemingly endless stretch of sand creates an overwhelming sense of space, with the shoreline continuing far beyond the horizon. It is a place where the scale of the landscape feels almost limitless.

Gulpiyuri: the hidden beach in the heart of the countryside

In Spain's Asturias region, Gulpiyuri is one of those natural curiosities that surprises visitors at first sight. This tiny beach lies inland, surrounded by lush green meadows rather than the open coast.

Despite its unusual location, its water comes directly from the Cantabrian Sea, flowing through underground caves before emerging in a natural basin to form a miniature beach. Designated a Natural Monument, Gulpiyuri feels like a secluded fragment of coastline mysteriously transported into the countryside.

The Giant's Causeway: a beach shaped by volcanoes

On the north coast of Northern Ireland, the Giant's Causeway presents one of the world's most remarkable coastal landscapes. Thousands of almost perfectly shaped basalt columns form a series of natural stepping stones leading into the Atlantic Ocean.

Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Giant's Causeway is as captivating for its extraordinary volcanic geology as it is for its almost otherworldly atmosphere.
