ARTIFICIAL intelligence startup Featherless.ai has raised $20 million in fresh funding, with investors highlighting its potential to make AI more accessible in the Philippines and across Southeast Asia.
The Series A round was co-led by AMD Ventures and Airbus Ventures, with participation from Kickstart Ventures and other global investors.
The startup’s angel investors said the platform’s focus on open-source models and lower-cost infrastructure could help address barriers to AI adoption in emerging markets, where high costs remain a key constraint.
“Access to AI at a fraction of the cost matters enormously in markets like Southeast Asia,” Kickstart Ventures general partner Joan Yao said.
Featherless.ai provides a platform for running open-source AI models without relying on proprietary systems controlled by major technology firms. It currently supports more than 30,000 models across language, vision, and audio applications.
The company said it planned to use the new capital to expand its global infrastructure, launch a marketplace for specialized AI models, and further reduce the cost of AI deployment.
“For markets like the Philippines, more accessible and independent solutions can help sustain long-term AI adoption,” the startup’s CEO and co-founder Eugene Cheah said.
Featherless.ai is positioning itself as a “neutral layer” for AI that would allow enterprises to build and run models without being tied to a single cloud provider or ecosystem.
“When a few dominant players control the entire stack, it limits what developers can build,” Cheah added.
The company said it was also working to diversify hardware options through its collaboration with Advanced Micro Devices, offering an alternative to more dominant proprietary systems.
Industry observers said such developments could support broader AI adoption in the Philippines, particularly among enterprises seeking more cost-efficient and flexible solutions. NAZYLEN JOY MABANGLO
