Artificial intelligence is permeating our world in an increasing speed. As I ponder its this influence, I have mixed feelings, both positive and negative. Maybe, many of you can identify with me.
Truly, the advancement in science and technology has indeed benefitted our world. Many things that we see and experience today were unthought of half a century ago. Many of our young people today would not be able to imagine life without the internet or handphones. How did people live then? Those were the days of patient waiting for the snail mail to arrive. Those were days when meals preparations were done painstakingly – pounding or grinding chillies using the grinding or pounding stone for sambal belacan, crushed roasted peanuts and the like.
Today, most of the chores of yesteryears can be done very much faster and easier. With the advancement in artificial intelligence, humanoid robots are now ready to help in many ways. When I watched how these humanoids were being demonstrated, helping the elderly in their homes and the like, I cannot dispel the fearful thought – “Will these robots one day malfunction and attack the humans who created them?” Many ‘What ifs’ flood my finite mind.
How is our world being conditioned these days? Many of us today are actually being ‘controlled or shaped’ by our handphones. It is just a small gadget; small enough to put into our pockets yet powerful enough to fulfill our job requirements or keep us entertained 24 hours a day.
When I read about disturbing news of suicide and murder cases especially among our children and teens, my thoughts go back to the influence of AI. After all, what is created with the good of humanity in mind can easily be misused by fallen mankind. Money is good and needed for us to live, but the love of money is evil. Greed for money induces corruption and betrayal. Technology is good but technology in the wrong hands can prove to be disastrous. Artificial intelligence is beneficial but it can also be misused.
I think all of us, regardless of age must be vigilant in these days of many subtle dangers that surround us. We need to beware of scams as well as our gadgets. For parents and teens this is an example of great harm -Chairman Hawley Exposes AI Chatbots For Harming Children.
