The artistic director of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra is stepping down in August 2028, the orchestra and the Berlin city administration's Department for Culture announced on Monday.
Andrea Zietzschmann will not be renewing her contract for a third term, they said.
"After 11 years in office, it will be time for me to embark on a new path in 2028," Zietzschmann, 55, explained.
The comprehensive refurbishment of the Philharmonic's concert hall, scheduled for 2032, will also "require a chief executive who is well versed in the subject matter and can oversee this demanding project in the long term," she wrote.
"The timing I have chosen for this change is intended to contribute to this," Zietzschmann added.
The building that houses the orchestra, an iconic golden-coloured, asymmetrical concert hall designed by architect German architect Hans Scharoun (1893-1972), is in need of renovation. The orchestra is expected to require temporary accommodation from 2032 onwards. Details are not yet known.
The Berlin Philharmonic - or Berliner Philharmoniker as it is known in German - is one of the world's leading orchestras.
Zietzschmann took over as artistic director of the Berlin Philharmonic Foundation for the 2017-18 season. The cultural manager also steered the orchestra through the pandemic.
