What does it mean to come home?
Is home a place we return to, a community we belong to, or the traditions that tell us who we are? And what happens when, somewhere along the way, we begin to lose touch with the very things that shaped us?
These are some of the questions at the heart of LOS | Kembali, one of my favourite programmes at George Town Festival 2026. I found it to be a thoughtful and moving performance that explores identity, belonging and the difficult journey of finding your way home.
Presented by Sekolah Main Wayang, an experimental theatre collective dedicated to empowering underserved and at-risk youth through the arts, LOS | Kembali is the latest production from its acclaimed Wayang TEKtek programme.
Created in collaboration with Indigenous Semai youths from Kampung Tumbuh Hangat, Perak, the performance tells the story of Agil, a young Orang Asli boy whose quiet resilience is tested by bullying, isolation and the pressure to abandon the traditions that have shaped his identity.
And while Agil's journey is deeply rooted in Orang Asli culture and spiritual beliefs, his struggle feels surprisingly universal. Because beneath the traditions, taboos and ancestral beliefs is a question many of us have wrestled with in our own way: Who am I, and where do I belong?
Agil finds himself increasingly isolated and begins drifting towards a group of fellow outcasts who, like him, struggle to find their place. As he becomes more distant from his community, he also moves further away from the values and wisdom passed down by his ancestors.
And this is where LOS | Kembali becomes more than a story about a young boy growing up.
It becomes a journey between two worlds - the expectations and influences of the modern world on one side, and the traditional wisdom of his Orang Asli heritage on the other.
When Agil and the others break ancient cultural taboos, they are confronted with consequences that force him to reconsider the choices he has made. Through this experience, Agil begins to understand the importance of his identity, his roots, his community and his ancestral knowledge.
Perhaps this is something we all struggle with at some point in our lives: knowing who we are also means knowing where we come from.
His journey leads him back to the traditions, community and ancestral knowledge that he had once been willing to leave behind.
The title Kembali, meaning “return”, is therefore particularly meaningful. It is not simply about returning home in the physical sense. It is about returning to one's roots, reconnecting with one's heritage and rediscovering who you are.
What makes the production particularly engaging is the way this story is brought to life. Shadow puppetry, masks, movement and live music come together to create a theatrical language that feels rooted in tradition while remaining boldly contemporary.
There is something powerful about seeing young Indigenous performers telling a story that comes from their own cultural landscape. Their presence gives the work a sense of authenticity and reminds us that heritage is not simply something preserved in museums, books or photographs. It is something that lives - and continues to evolve - through the people who carry it forward.
This is also what makes the work of Sekolah Main Wayang so meaningful. Through the Wayang TEKtek programme, the collective uses theatre not simply as a form of performance, but as a way of giving young people a platform to tell their own stories and have their voices heard.
In LOS | Kembali, those voices become part of a larger conversation about heritage, resilience and belonging - while reminding us that some of the stories we most need to hear are often those that have been overlooked.
At its heart, LOS | Kembali asks a simple but important question: What happens when we become so focused on fitting into the world around us that we forget where we came from?
Perhaps the answer lies in the title itself.
Sometimes, finding your way forward begins with learning how to kembali - to return.
