If you've been looking for an excuse to experience George Town Festival (GTF), this year's edition offers plenty of opportunities to dive into the arts, culture and creativity that have made the festival one of Malaysia's most anticipated annual events.
Running from 1 to 9 August, GTF 2026 presents more than 40 programmes under the theme "Beyond Boundaries". While there are several ticketed productions, around 80% of the festival is free, transforming George Town's streets, heritage buildings and public spaces into an open playground for music, theatre, visual arts, film and community experiences.
Here's a quick guide to some of the free highlights.
PERFORMING ARTS & MUSIC
Six to Eleven
(1 & 2 Aug, 6pm–11pm @ Padang Kota Lama)
The festival's massive opening weekend transforms Padang Kota Lama into an evening carnival featuring live music, projection mapping, roaming performances, light installations, arts market and interactive activities. Six to Eleven features:
nalan! by Alena Murang (1-2 Aug / 9pm)
Award-winning Sarawakian musician Alena Murang blends the sounds of the sape, indigenous languages and contemporary music into an unforgettable cultural performance.
Suara Rimba dan Arus by At Adau (1-2 Aug /10pm)
An energetic ethnic fusion concert combining traditional Bornean instruments with modern sounds.
DUNDU – Sharing the Light (1-2 Aug / multiple sessions)
A magical giant illuminated puppet roams among audiences accompanied by live West African music.
Thai Masked Dance (2 Aug / 6pm)
Experience Thailand's classical Khon dance theatre inspired by the Ramakien epic.
Jom Layan Selects & Vinyl Experience (1-2 Aug / 7.30pm - 8.30pm)
A celebration of DJ culture, vinyl collecting and analogue music featuring local selectors and live demonstrations.
Flamenco Signature
(3 Aug, 8pm @ Loft 29)
International flamenco star Anabel Veloso celebrates over two decades of artistry through an emotionally charged evening of dance, music and Spanish culture.
Beginners are welcome to a Flamenco hands-on workshop on August 2, 8pm - 9pm at Loft 29 to explore the rhythm, movement and storytelling behind the iconic dance form. (Pre-registration required.)
THEATRE & STREET PERFORMANCES
GTF x ASAF
(15 & 16 Aug @ Design Village Outlet Mall)
George Town Festival collaborates with South Korea's Ansan Street Arts Festival, bringing street theatre, physical theatre, puppetry and contemporary dance into public spaces. Featured productions include:
- An Old House – a poetic movement piece about memory and life's journey.
- Dokkaebi's Dream Site – Korean folklore meets contemporary dance.
- Come On Baby – a charming tabletop puppet show about the miracle of birth.
- Click Click – a heartwarming non-verbal family comedy using magic, masks and audience participation.
Hans im Glück
(1 & 2 Aug @ Pop-up Stage, Padang Kota Lama)
A delightful German shadow puppet adaptation of the classic fairy tale, suitable for both children and adults.
The Web of Deceits
(1 & 2 Aug / 5pm @ The Whiteaways Arcade)
Inspired by Journey to the West, this lively English hand-puppet show follows Monkey King as he battles the Spider Demon to rescue his companions. Puppet workshops are also available.

Discover Malaysia's only professional wet plate photographer, Steve Tan, and the haunting beauty of nineteenth-century photography techniques.
Shifting Whispers
(1–9 Aug / 11am–4pm @ China House)
A multidisciplinary exhibition exploring identity, landscape and memory through immersive installations.
Con-Temporary Art (CTA)
(1–9 Aug, 2pm–8pm @ Various locations)
Perhaps the smallest contemporary art gallery you'll ever visit—a fully functional exhibition inside a miniature 1/12-scale gallery.
Street Fragments: Jalan Gurdwara
(1–9 Aug @ Hin Bus Depot Gallery & Book Island)
A fascinating community exhibition uncovering the forgotten stories, memories and history hidden along one of George Town's streets.
The Natural History Museum of Yeahnahnesia
(1–9 Aug @ Cultprint)
A whimsical fictional museum filled with paintings, sculptures and installations imagining an entirely different island civilisation.
Converge
(1–31 Aug @ Taman Kejiranan Macallum)
Taiwanese artist Kuei-Chih Lee creates a large-scale outdoor installation celebrating nature, migration and multicultural coexistence.
Artisan II
(1–30 Aug / Fri–Sun @ O Sculpture Art Space)
An immersive tribute to George Town's disappearing master craftsmen and traditional trades.
FILM
Wayang Pacak
3–9 Aug / 9pm @ Seh Tek Tong Cheah Kongsi
An open-air film programme featuring Malaysian and Asian documentaries, animation and independent films, with many screenings followed by Q&A sessions with filmmakers.
Highlights include:
- Ayahku, Dr. G – A daughter fights to save her father from the death penalty after he is arrested for allegedly using medical cannabis.
- Menunggu Masa – A moving documentary following a family waiting for their loved one to return from death row.
- Five Tigers – The forgotten story of five women who fought for workers' rights and social justice in 1960s Penang.
- TRACE/US – Two artists search for traces of loved ones they've lost in this deeply personal documentary.
- The Weight of Silence – Two sisters confront childhood trauma and long-buried family secrets.
- On Happiness Road – An award-winning animated film about identity, home and discovering what happiness truly means.
- Remembering Azmi – A heartfelt tribute celebrating the life, art and legacy of the late Azmi Hussin.
- Air Mata di Kuala Lumpur – Ridhwan Saidi's poignant drama about two women brought together by grief, love and longing.

Paint the Town ______!

Browse an arts market featuring local artists, independent makers and creative entrepreneurs.

Watch George Town's heritage buildings transformed nightly through spectacular projection mapping inspired by the spirit of the traditional marketplace.
