Speculation is growing within PAS over a potential leadership transition, following indications that party president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang may step down from his role due to health concerns.
During a closed-door retreat with senior PAS leaders in Terengganu last weekend, the Marang MP is said to have broached the subject himself, reportedly citing his ongoing health issues as a possible reason for relinquishing his position. Sources close to the matter revealed that the revelation has sparked serious discussions among the party’s top ranks, particularly within the influential ulama faction.
According to those familiar with the proceedings, Hadi's comments were seen as more than a passing remark, prompting internal moves to prepare for a potential leadership change. The party’s Dewan Ulama reportedly began efforts to persuade current deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man to step up as Hadi’s successor.
The conversation has led to calls for a more structured vetting process for candidates aspiring to the party’s top two posts. A proposal was put forward by Dewan Ulama member Mokhtar Senik, suggesting that the Syura Council, PAS’s highest decision-making body, should oversee and evaluate leadership nominees to ensure they meet the necessary standards and possess the right credentials.
Vice-president Datuk Mohd Ahmad Nik Abdullah reaffirmed the party’s structural succession plan, stating that the deputy president would be the natural choice should the president vacate the role. Despite this, uncertainty remains over whether Tuan Ibrahim is ready or willing to take up the mantle, with some insiders suggesting that the high bar set by Hadi’s leadership may be weighing heavily on him.
Concerns over Hadi’s health are not new. In mid-2023, he was hospitalised after experiencing breathing difficulties, requiring treatment at both Hospital Putrajaya and the National Heart Institute. While he later resumed his duties, the episode highlighted the physical toll of leadership, particularly within a party as politically active as PAS.
As discussions unfold behind closed doors, party members are now watching closely for any formal announcement. Should Hadi follow through on his intention, it would mark the end of an era and usher in a new phase for the Islamist party—one that could test both its internal cohesion and long-held traditions.
