KUALA LUMPUR – Preparations are in full swing ahead of the 46th Asean Summit, with authorities intensifying efforts to manage traffic and beautify the capital as Malaysia gets ready to host regional leaders from May 26 to 27.

PLUS Malaysia Bhd (PLUS) has advised motorists to plan their journeys ahead of a series of phased highway closures to facilitate the movement of international delegates.

The closures, instructed by the Royal Malaysia Police’s Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT), will be in effect from May 23 to 26 starting at 7am, and again on May 28 from 8am.

Affected routes include:

- KLIA to Putrajaya via the North-South Expressway Central Link (ELITE)
- Subang to Jalan Duta via the New Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE)
- Sungai Buloh to Jalan Duta via the North-South Expressway

Motorists travelling to and from KLIA or the Subang RMAF Airbase are urged to consider alternate routes to avoid delays. PLUS is coordinating with traffic police to ensure minimal disruption and will provide live updates via the PLUS app, X @PLUSTrafik, Variable Message Signs (VMS), PDRM social media, and apps like Google Maps and Waze.

Meanwhile, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has rolled out extensive urban transformation measures to enhance the city’s image as a clean, safe and globally competitive host, Bernama reported.

These include the upgrading of over 30 key areas, installation of 224 modern rubbish bins, mural decoration of 40 waste collection centres, daily deployment of litter-picking teams along main routes, and infrastructure improvements such as road resurfacing and new walkways in high-traffic zones like Jalan Tun Razak, Jalan Bangsar and Jalan P. Ramlee.

A city-wide cleanliness campaign is also underway, with DBKL urging premises owners to repaint buildings and maintain their surroundings.

More than 5,000 CCTVs are in operation, supported by a newly activated Public Incident Operations Room to monitor and respond to any emergencies throughout the summit.

Malaysia will also host the 2nd Asean-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit and the Asean-GCC-China Summit alongside the main summit, followed by the Asean Summit with Dialogue Partners in October. – May 22, 2025
