
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged Asean to leverage the expertise of Japan and South Korea in renewable energy and green technology to address the pressing challenges posed by climate change. During the 26th Asean-Japan Summit and the 24th Asean-Republic of Korea Summit, Anwar emphasized the critical role of these technologies in combating climate change and driving sustainable development in the region.
Japan, in particular, has made substantial advancements in clean energy technology, serving as a model for countries striving to adopt eco-friendly initiatives. Anwar stressed the importance of intensifying efforts to combat the impact of climate change and adopting renewable energy solutions. Asean could benefit significantly from Japan's expertise in developing clean energy technologies and renewable energy projects. Anwar highlighted initiatives such as the Asean-Japan Energy Efficiency Partnership and Asean-Japan Climate Change Action Agenda 2.0 as avenues for knowledge sharing and collaboration.
The Prime Minister expressed Malaysia's appreciation for the progress made in implementing the Asean-Japan Economic Resilience Action Plan, which aims to enhance supply chain resilience, drive digital innovation, and protect intellectual property. He emphasized the need to boost productivity and address societal challenges while underlining the critical role of the Asean-Japan Economic Partnership agreement and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership in ensuring continued economic progress.
Anwar emphasized the enduring partnership between Asean and Japan, highlighting Japan's status as one of Asean's earliest partners and investors. He anticipated that this relationship would continue to expand across various sectors, fostering a more comprehensive network in business and culture. Anwar also expressed gratitude for Japan's support in establishing a center for digital innovation and sustainable economy in the Economic Research Institute for Asean and East Asia.
Turning to the Asean-Republic of Korea Summit, Anwar stressed the importance of focusing on green growth and climate sustainability. Asean should prioritize low carbon and climate-resilient socioeconomic development while actively conserving national resources and ecosystems. Malaysia welcomed the establishment of the Asean-Republic of Korea Cooperation Center for Carbon Neutrality and Green Transition, underscoring the commitment to environmental sustainability.
Anwar further emphasized the need for increased collaboration between Asean and South Korea to promote digital literacy, innovative technology, and interconnected digital infrastructure. These initiatives are crucial drivers of economic growth and the inclusive empowerment of people in the region.
