KUALA LUMPUR, July 3 — Asia-Pacific airlines saw a 27 per cent year-on-year (y-o-y) increase in passenger demand in May 2024, measured in revenue passenger kilometres, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
It said Asia-Pacific airlines also saw their capacity, measured in available seat kilometres, increasing by 26 per cent y-o-y and the load factor rising to 81.6 per cent in May 2024 compared with May 2023.
“This performance maintains Asian carriers as the largest contributor to industry-wide growth in May 2024, accounting for 42 per cent of the y-o-y increase,” it said in a statement today.
Globally, IATA said passenger demand went up 10.7 per cent in May 2024 compared to May 2023, while total capacity was up 8.5 per cent y-o-y, and load factor stood at 83.4 per cent in May 2024.
On the international front, passenger demand rose 14.6 per cent against May 2023, capacity was up 14.1 per cent y-o-y, and the load factor improved to 82.8 per cent.
“Domestic demand rose 4.7 per cent compared with May 2023; capacity was up 0.1 per cent y-o-y, and the load factor was at 84.5 per cent,” IATA said.
