Kota Kinabalu: A 46-year-old man was fined RM800 or three weeks jail for assaulting a man.

Tedih Abdillah pleaded guilty before Magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles to voluntarily causing hurt to Vickly Mobilim by slapping him on June 26, last year at 7.45am at the Court Complex’s main entrance.

Tedih was charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to a year or fine of up to RM2,000 or both, on conviction.

Prosecuting Officer, Inspector Kelvan Elson Maik, told the court that Vickly lodged a police report at 5:21pm, stating that he was slapped by his girlfriend’s uncle.

Read more Kelvan said the incident resulted from a traffic summon received by Vickly for using Tedih’s car. Although the car was utilised by Vicky, it was registered under Tedih’s name.

On April 18, Vickly was in court for having expired driving licence and vehicle tax. Kelvan said Tedih was angry because this was the second incident involving the car. Vickly was slapped once on the left cheek but did not sustain serious injuries.

Duty Counsel, Lim Ming Zoong @ Lawrence, representing Tedih, requested a lenient fine as he came to the court all the way from Kota Belud and fully cooperated with the police. However, Kelvan applied for a deterrence sentence.

In another case, a 36-year-old man was fined RM2800 or three months jail for having drugs.

Jason James pleaded guilty to having syabu weighing 0.02gm on Sept 3, last year between 1.30pm and 3.30pm at Jalan Papar Lama, Penampang.

He was charged under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which provides for a fine of up to RM100,000 or up to five years’ jail, or both, on conviction.

Kelvan told the court that police arrested Jason and found a packet of drugs on him.

Lim, representing Jason, requested a lenient fine as he is a first-time offender and is remorseful. Kelvan applied for a deterrence sentence.
