TAWAU: Police arrested six men, including a 16-year-old, in connection with a violent assault that took place in Kampung Kuala Merotai Besar on Sunday.
Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said the suspects are believed to have attacked a 19-year-old who was driving home after dropping off his girlfriend.
“The incident happened at 10.30pm after the victim’s vehicle was blocked by a group of unknown men. He was then dragged out and beaten by the group,” he said, Tuesday.
Jasmin said the victim did not know the reason for the attack, but acknowledged recognising one of the suspects, and lodging a report at the Bombalai police station.
Acting on the report, police launched an operation to track down all suspects in the village at 4.05pm on Monday.
“All arrested suspects are locals aged between 16 and 21. They are currently being remanded to assist with investigations,” he said.
Preliminary investigations suggest the incident stemmed from a misunderstanding between the victim and the suspects.
“We will not compromise with those involved in violent acts or disturbing public order. We urge the public to report any criminal incidents,” Jasmin added.
