SIPITANG: Sindumin Assemblyman Yusri Pungut has urged the Water Department to take immediate action to resolve the ongoing water supply disruptions affecting several areas in the district.
He said he views the persistent water supply problems seriously, as they have significantly impacted the daily lives of residents across the district.
“This issue not only affects small businesses, schools, mosques and the daily affairs of the local community, but the public at large,” Yusri said.
He said he had officially raised the matter with the Sabah Water Department during an official working visit to the department, requesting that urgent action be taken to provide a comprehensive solution.
He said basic necessities such as clean water supply should not be taken lightly, and that the people have the right to enjoy consistent and quality services.
Additionally, he detailed the extent of the water crisis, pointing out that schoolchildren are unable to bathe, families struggle to wash clothes, and pregnant women and new mothers face difficulties in caring for their newborns, in addition to other daily household needs.
“Most of those affected are from all walks of life, particularly B40 households who do not have water tanks to store water supply, forcing them to purchase bottled water from nearby premises,” he said.
He noted that affected residents must bear additional costs, including traveling to town just to buy bottled water, while still having to pay their water bills despite receiving intermittent or murky water supply.
Yusri has also requested that the relevant department provide clear explanations as well as short-term and long-term plans to prevent the problem from recurring.
