Kota Kinabalu: An assistant engineer has been charged with two counts of accepting bribes totaling RM200,488 from a company owned by his cousin.

Aldey Kangit, 44 (pic), attached to the Kiulu Sub-District Office, pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court on Thursday.

He is accused of abusing his position to receive RM75,998.10 on Aug 22, 2023, and another RM142,490.50 on Sept 13, 2023, at the Kiulu Sub-District Office.

Under Section 23(1) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009, the offence carries a jail term of up to 20 years and a fine of at least five times the bribe amount or RM10,000, whichever is higher.

The court set Feb 23 for pre-trial case management and granted Aldey RM20,000 bail, with RM10,000 in two local sureties.

He must report to the nearest MACC office every two months, surrender his international passport, and avoid interfering with prosecution witnesses.

MACC Prosecutor Norsham Baharom represented the prosecution, while Mohd Al Hafidz Mohd Lokman appeared for Aldey.
