Prosecutors are investigating illegal bets made by several players, including Zaniolo, who was released by the Italy squad this week.
The former Roma attacker, reports ANSA, may face a charge specifically of violating Article 4 of law 401/98.
That is a charge of effectively not just using illegal betting sites, but also organising and spreading the practice.
It's reported both Zaniolo and Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali assured police and agents they only bet on poker and blackjack.
