At least 18 people have been killed and 29 others injured in a traffic accident in eastern Afghanistan, authorities said on Saturday.

Taliban government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said the crash occurred in the Qarghayi district of Laghman province. He offered condolences for the victims.

Local officials said 10 children were among the dead. Several of the injured are in critical condition.

Police said the accident happened when a truck carrying Afghan refugees returning from Pakistan overturned.

Serious road accidents are frequent in Afghanistan, where poor road conditions, limited vehicle maintenance and unsafe driving practices contribute to high annual fatalities.

In 2015, 78 people - mostly deportees returning from Iran - were killed when a bus caught fire after a crash in western Afghanistan.
