At least 89 people have been killed in severe storms that wreaked havoc in India's Uttar Pradesh, local authorities reported on Thursday.

More than 50 people were injured and some 90 buildings damaged as heavy rain, hail and lightening came down in the northern state, it said.

At least 114 livestock were also killed.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has ordered for affected families to be given financial support.

Trees were uprooted and power pylons torn down in many parts of India's most populous state, home to some 240 million.

Several people were killed due to collapsing walls, according to local media reports.

A video shared by several outlets shows a man in the Bareilly district being carried away by the strong winds several metres above ground after being unable to cling on to a tin roof that was torn away by the storm.

He reportedly survived the fall, though he was injured.
