At least eight dead in Chinese coal mine accident

At least eight people have died following a gas explosion at a coal mine in northern China, state news agency Xinhua reported on Saturday.

Another 38 miners remain trapped inside the mine in Qinyuan County, Shanxi Province, according to China's state news agency Xinhua.

The explosion occurred on Friday evening. By early on Saturday morning, a total of 201 people had been rescued from the mine, including the eight deceased. Rescue operations continued. The cause of the accident was initially unknown.
