One man was killed when a nine-storey building under construction in Angeles City in the Philippines collapsed in the early hours on Sunday, according to local authorities.
At least 20 workers remain trapped under the rubble, officials said.
It had rained heavily in the area in the hours leading up to the accident. However, according to authorities, it is still unclear whether this caused the collapse of the building, a planned hotel-condominium complex.
“It is still too early to speculate on what caused the building to collapse,” said Jay Pelayo, spokesman for Angeles City. “Rescue operations are still under way.”
So far eight workers have been rescued with light injuries, while another 11 managed to free themselves from the collapsed building, Pelayo said.
According to earlier information, between 30 and 40 people were trapped in the rubble.
Angeles City is located around 80 kilometres north of the capital Manila. A large US Air Force base was located there until the early 1990s.
